Were there problems like this for the Dragon festival? I remember around 200 districts in Shing Jea. Would there be more people than that trying to be on?

I just want to do the Thirsty River mission.

I am going to explain what's going on in a very simple analogy

Think of a plastic sandwich bag as Anet's GW servers. Each time someone logs on, a bit more air is added into the bag.

So, what do you think will happen when too many people log on? That's right, BOOM! The bag explodes and all the air is let out. Also, no more air can get in the bag because there's at least one big hole somewhere. So what this means is that when too many people log on, the servers make like a paper bag and overload, and then a WHOLE lot of people get kicked. Also, you can't log in because there's a big hole in the "bag."

Anet fixes the problem by patching up the hole, and possibly making the bag bigger. They may also just buy a much bigger bag.

However, it's not as easy as one might think. They have to diagnose exactly what caused the problem, be it too many people in one area and not enough districts, too many people on in general, or some other weird server issue. Once they've figured out the problem, they have to take appropriate measures. Resetting the server is one if the server overloaded, and this can take upwards of 45 minutes to an hour. Allocating more districts to a certain area may also be needed, but that takes a bit of programming to do. And in the worst case scenario, if it was a different server issue, they have to figure out what's causing the problem and then do a whole bunch of different stuff depending on what it is.

Now with all these people logging on GW for the Elite Weekend, there's probably more than Anet's servers could handle. So now they need to reset the overloaded servers and bring in some emergency bandwidth to handle the problem.

By the way, I got kicked too and have been out for a while.

Actually the first thing I did was check here also. But I guess at the time it was still early so no one made any posts about any connection problems. Which then lead me to believe it had something to do with my side of the connection.

The weird thing for me is last night when I was logging in and out all night, there was a red annoucement titled "emergency maintenance!" and was talking about the euro data centre being offline for a while due to, well, emergency maintenance.

Despite this, I was able to play for well over 6 hours last night, logging in and out to do work on all my characters. I go to log back in today: the red message is gone! Whats this? Have they fixed it?, I think to myself......

So what do you think happens? code 13 cannot login at all, just like the rest of you. They kinda put the cart before the horse with that emergency announcement, not happy jan

I guess you forgot the 100+ districts of Shing Jea? =P

Obviously a server error though. Maybe the update screwed up with the code that we use to connect.

Yeah, this really blows. I was hoping to maybe be able to do the mission and maybe pick up a couple rares tonight.

I understand the people that say the servers could overload from too many people online...but....don't you think that anet could at least ANTICIPATE, or maybe prepare somehow? They HAVE to know there'd be a HUGE flood of users if they advertise free entrance to the missions AND double the rare drop rates... o_o

Yes it does take a lot of work to resolve issues with the servers and try to get things up and running as fast as possible.

But my issue is with how they go about releasing update after update, saying 'oops we forgot to do this' and 'oops we forgot to do that.' Now I'm not saying that anyone is perfect or that this game should flow flawlessly without ever hitting a bump. It just seems that any kind of quality control seems to have gone right out the window, with this being the most recent problem to have surfaced; because if they are going to release these special events, in order to get people to play more or for whatever reason, one would expect them to anticipate higher amounts of server traffic.

And while yes it is free online play, I'm left wondering if I should really bother to buy further chapters if things like this continue to happen. Or if they should really bother to hold these special weekend events, when they could think up a more permenant solution to have people continue to buy, play, and enjoy the game.

525,600 minutes in a year. gw goes down for 200 (realisticly MAYBE 1000) mins, better never buy another chapter, in fact just quit the game all together, start posting your accnts and passwords.

Dont get your panties in a bunch people
